Description Antique American Chippendale mahogany corner chair having a raised moulded back rest above a horizontal, semi-circular arm rail terminating to circular hand rests; having two open carved pretzel splats, slip seat, turned arm supports terminating to square Chippendale legs with stop fluting; square cross stretchers, straight apron, 16 seat height, fine original condition and finish, Goddard School, Newport, R.I., circa 1770. A Chippendale carved mahogany corner chair, Newport, R.I., 1760-1780, with curved armrail above two perched splats flanked by turned supports over a square slip seat, on four square stop fluted legs. Width: 30 1/4. (Ralph E. Carpenter, 1991)Chair has new corner blocks. There are Roman numerals carved in the wood to show lineup of corners. No work holes present. V in design was not cut out. One of arms repaired after break, probably while turning the post. There is a big discrepancy in styles from the legs and the top. Crude carving of back. Curatorial person should look at it - it could have been 19th Century. (Ralph E. Carpenter, 1994)
