Description Engraved: 1685 on thumbpiece (added and probably incorrect); ITH on handle, original owner probably John and H. Townsend; also on handle, HE, AH, AF, CT, ET, and MSH on handle terminal; scrolled thumbpiece; low flat dome on stepped lid. (newport Historical Society, 1991Antique American silver tankard made by Samuel Vernon, Newport, R.I., having a flat top hinged cover with a shell thumb-piece, canted body, c-scroll handle; handle initialed HE, AE, CF, EF, dated 1685 on body, 4.5-inch diameter top, 5.25-inch diameter base, 7 inches tall, fine condition, circa 1715.
