ULAN ID: 500016005 LCC ID: n80010033 Washington Allston (1779-1843) was a well-known painter of portraits as well as of historical, religious, and allegorical subjects. He was born in South Carolina, the middle son of William A. Allston and Rachael Moore, who later married Henry Collins Flagg upon the death of her first husband (Rachael Moore was Alice Claypoole Gwynne Vanderbilt's great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother of Countess S echényi). In 1787 Washington was sent to the Newport classical school founded by Robert Rogers. After graduating from Harvard, he spent a brief period in Newport and then South Carolina before going abroad to study art. He returned in 1808, married Ann Channing, the sister of William Ellery Channing, in 1809 and returned to Europe for a decade. The rest of his life he spent mainly in Boston and Cambridge, producing little but exerting a strong influence upon the romantic painters of the time.
