In 1848 he settled in Rome where he maintained a studio, devoting himself entirely to painting, until his death. A painter, wood engraver, etcher, and designer for book illustrations, After returning to Italy in 1848 he had a studio for several years in Washington, D.C., where he painted Baptism of Pocahontas, now in the rotunda of the Capitol.
