Reverend Thomas Hiscox (1686-1773), a Newport native, served as minister of the Westerly, Rhode Island Seventh Day Baptist Congregation.Hiscox was the son of Reverend William Hiscox of Newport as well as Justice of the Peace and Town Treasurer. This portrait, the only one of the Széchényi Collection representing someone who was not a family member, was commissioned by Henry Collins (subject of Redwood paintings #149 and 150), the "Lorenzo de Medici of Rhode Island.
