LCC ID: n95109799 Charles Goodwin Ridgely (1784-1847), born 2 July 1784 in Baltimore, Maryland, entered the Navy as a midshipman in 1799 and by 1815 was promoted to the rank of Captain. During this time he cruised in the Mediterranean in the Tripolitan War 1804-05; was commissioned Lieutenant in 1807; commanded the brig Jefferson and the sloops-of-war Erie and Independence during and after the Algerine War 1815-17. He married Cornelia Livingston in 1822 and commanded the West India Squadron 1827-30. In charge of the Brooklyn Naval Yard 1832-39, he served his last sea duty in command of the Brazil Squadron 1840-42 and died 4 Feb 1847 in Baltimore. (Park 2:646) |
