Robert Rogers (1758-1835) was the son of Reverend William Rogers, D.D. Born in Newport, he graduated from the College of Rhode Island (now Brown University) in 1775. After serving in the Revolution he opened a successful classical school in Newport. He was treasurer, secretary, and librarian of the Redwood for twenty years (1812-31) and prepared the second catalogue of the collection in 1816. He was a member of the corporation of Brown University for almost fifty years and a fellow of Brown University for four years. He was the grandfather of John Allston and father-in-law of William Moore Allston, Washington Allston's brother. In 1871 Roger's widow, Maria De Wolf Rogers, donated $3,000 worth of books to the library and set up the "Robert Rogers Memorial Fund" for the maintenance of the Redwood's collection. Significance: Robert Rogers was treasurer, secretary, and librarian of the Redwood for twenty years (1812-31) and prepared the second catalogue of the collection in 1816. |
