Mary Wanton (1708-1767), the daughter of Ann Dudley and John Winthrop, and granddaughter of Governor Joseph Dudley of Connecticut, was married to Joseph Wanton. Portrait. Adult female subject in Colonial dress, waist-length view, facing left at three-quarter turn with head turned and tilted toward right, eyes facing forward. Her [ ] dress...... Her neck is bare with a low rounded decolletage softened with a border of lace. Her sleeves.......... Closely dressed [ light brown] hair parted in the middle and gathered in the back. The background is [ ] visible behind an oval shaped frame.... |

Formerly #30 (76 on 1859 list). A copy of this painting - without the flowers - was made by Jane Stuart in 1864 (Booklist Feb 1936); probably that which is now at the Massachusetts Historical Society. It may have been at this time the bouquet was added by Jane Stuart, supposedly at request of Redwood Directors. A restorer of the portrait, Arthur G.
