Description |
George Washington, first president of the United States, was born 22 February 1732 in Virginia. Although little is known of his early life, he showed early skill in mathematics and land surveying and became manager of the estate of Mt. Vernon, inherited at the death of his half-brother, Lawrence. His practical, natural leadership qualities earned him a career as a soldier and later statesman in the struggle for freedom. After retiring from the presidency, he spent his remaining years in Mt. Vernon where he died 14 December 1799. In this portrait he is wearing his military uniform from the French and Indian War, a tricorn hat, and a gorget. Portrait, after Charles Wilson Peale. Adult male subject. Mid-waist length view. He is turned slightly to his right. He has brown hair and blue eyes. He is wearing his military uniform from the French and Indian War, a tricorn hat, and a gorget. |
