Description |
Dr. Charles Cotton (1788-1870) was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard in 1808. He was a surgeon in the Navy during the war of 1812 and oversaw the Newport Naval Hospital. After the war, he stayed in Newport and continued to run the hospital, as well as becoming involved with the Rhode Island Historical Society and Trinity Church. Portrait (after O.S. Freeland). Adult male in Colonial dress, bust view, facing left, eyes forward. Subject has brown hair and eyes and wears a brown coat and tie and white shirt. The background is dark brown. |
