Description |
Daniel Turner (1795-1850) joined the United States Navy after a childhood in Newport. He commanded the brig Caledonia in the Battle of Lake Erie under the command of Oliver Hazard Perry and later served as Commodore of the Brazil Squadron (1843-1850). Portrait. Adult male subject in Colonial military dress, waist-length view, facing left three-quarter turn with eyes facing forward. Left hand rests on the hilt of a gold sword, right arm at diagonal to body with hand outside picture plane. The subject has dark brown hair and sideburns, blue eyes and wears a black military coat with gold buttons, epaulets and acorn leaf decoration on sleeves and collar, and white shirt with black border at neck. The background is a uniform dark brown with the back of a red chair visible at lower right below left shoulder of subject. |

Formerly #39. When Redwood Directors voted to accept the gift it was stated that the portrait of Captain Turner would be "placed on the walls by the side of that of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry". Painted when Turner was 39 years old. (Annals 385-6) |
