Description |
George Berkeley , D. D., Bishop of Cloyne, Ireland, lived in what is now Middletown from 1729 to 1731. He was one of the founders in 1730 of the Newport Philosophical Society, the precursor of the Redwood Library. Portrait, after Smibert. Adult male subject in clerical dress, bust view, facing left three-quarter turn, head and eyes slightly raised also facing left. The subject wears a wig, black clerical robes and white cascading collar similar to collar of Reverend Hiscox painting by Feke. Attributed to Alfred Hart |
