Description |
Dr. David King (1812-1882), eldest son of Dr. David King (subject of painting #101 by Charles Bird King), was born in Newport 12 May 1812. He graduated from Brown University in 1831 and received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1834. He moved to Newport to practice and in 1837 married Sarah Gibbs Wheaton. Dr. King was President of the Rhode Island Medical Society, one of the founders of the American Medical Society in 1848, and the Newport Historical Society where he was its first president. Dr. King was President of the Redwood Library from 1849 to 1859 and a member of the board of directors until his death. (Annals 389-90; Annual Report 1882, 17,19). Significance: Dr. David King (1812-1882) was Library President (1849-59) and benefactor (not to be confused with his father, also Dr. David King, who was Library President 1830-36). Portrait. Adult male subject. Seated. Mid-waist length view. He is turned 3/4ths to his left, while he gazes at the viewer. He has a receding hairline. He wears a black necktie, white shirt, and black coat. A bookcase is in the left background. The background is brown. |
