Description |
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) rose from humble beginnings to become a self-taught lawyer, an astute politician, and the sixteenth president of the United States. Lincoln led the country through the Civil War (1861-1865) and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring the freedom of southern slaves. His second term as president came to an untimely end with his assassination in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth. Portrait. Adult Male Subject. Mid-waist length view. He is turned 3/4ths to his left. He has brown hair and eyes. He wears a black necktie, a white shirt, and a white coat. The background is brown. |

This portrait appears to faithfully copy a Mathew Brady photograph, believed to have been done in 1863, which is reproduced in Meserve (plate 77). 1961 (11 Feb-6 March) Newport Art Museum "Civil War Centenial Exhibition" Previously attributed to A.J. Ward or Pastora B. Humphreys, but shown to be a bequest of Pastora B. Humphreys upon discovery of her will by a researcher, Mr. Andrew Oliver. |
