Description |
Mary "Polly" Lawton (1761-1793) was born in Newport to great wealth. She was introduced to many prominent men during the Revolutionary War, including George Washington and Rochambeau, all of whom vividly remembered and remarked upon her beauty, grace and piety, earning her a place in colonial history. Portrait (after a miniature by James Peale). Adult female subject in Colonial dress, bust view, facing right three-quarter turn. Subject has brown hair and hazel eyes and wears grey Quaker bonnet and dress with white lace trim. |

Formerly #56. This work was copied many decades after Polly Lawton's death from a miniature painted by James Peale in 1790 (owned by George P. Lawton). Artist originally listed as Bradley A.
