Description |
Henry Gurdon Marquand (1819-1902) was a wealthy philanthropist and art collector who single-handedly bolstered the holdings of the Redwood Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Princeton University. He served on the Redwood Library’s Board of Directors from 1887, eventually becoming President in 1895 – a position he held until his death. This particular painting is a copy of one done by John Singer Sargent. Portrait (after John Singer Sargent). Adult seated male subject, waist-length view, eyes and figure facing forward. His right arm hangs over the back of a chair; his left elbow rests on a table, his hand with a ring on the ring finger, at his temple. The subject has grey hair, long sideburns, and full moustache and wears a black coat and vest with a white shirt, cufflinks visible on the left sleeve. The background is brown. |
