Description |
William Redwood (1734-1794), son of Abraham Redwood, married Sarah Pope in 1757; moved to Philadelphia; died in Burlington, New Jersey. He was named a member of the Library in 1758 and became a Director in 1768. Portrait. He is shown standing, half-way to the right, with his brown eyes directed slightly to the spectator's right. His very dark brown hair is worn in a queue bow and his complexion is ruddy. He wears a light grayish-olive satin coat and waistcoat, with buttons to match, and a white neckpiece. The two top buttons of the waistcoat are unfastened, showing a ruffled shirt; a fine lace ruffle is also seen at the wrist of his right arm, the hand of which is thrust into his waistcoat, where another button is unfastened; the left hand is not seen. The background is of dark warm colors with deep shadows at lower right, and a brown draped curtain at the left. (Park 2:635-6) |
