Description |
Lina Post Webster (1866-1951), daughter of A. Kingston Post and Marie de Trobriand, was born in New York city 11 November 1866. After marrying Hamilton Fish Webster in 1891, she began spending summers in Newport, becomming a legal resident in 1901. Active in Republican politics until 1926, she was elected to the Representative Council in 1933 as a Democrat from the Fourth Ward, the first woman to serve on the council. She was re-elected in 1934, at the same time holding the post of president of the Newport County Women's Democratic Club. She later broke with President Roosevelt and withdrew from political activity. Her charitable interests included the Rocky Farm Camp for Crippled Children, the Protestant Episcopal Church, Trinity Church and the Seaman's Church Institute (she donated the chapel to the memory of her mother, Mrs. Post). She also gave the south wing of the Redwood Library in 1941 in memory of her husband. Portrait. Adult seated female subject, knee-length view, with head facing forward and slightly tipped to the left, and body facing slightly to the right. Her left hand loosely holds in her lap a bouquet of purple flowers with green leaves, while her right wrist rests lightly on the back of the top of a dark brown, possibly leather, chair. On the ring finger of her right hand is a blue stone set in a gold band, while a small brooch is visible to the left on her bust. Subject with dark brown hair pulled back and brown eyes is wearing a long black formal dress with puffy three-quarter length sleeves. The background shades at the left from dark brown to a warm sienna on the right. Visible behind the figure is what appears to be possibly the back of a chair of baroquely carved wood. |
