Description |
John Callender (1706-1748) was the preacher at First Baptist Church in Newport from 1731 until his death in 1748. During his time in Newport, Reverend Callender joined a very selective pre-existing literary and philosophical society. This became the group of charter members that founded the Redwood Library. Portrait, Adult Male Subject. Mid-waist length view. He is turned slightly to right, while his head is turned to his left; he has both hands behind his back; he is wearing a wig and a clerical robe and lace collar; the background is brown; copy from Robert Feke; original at Rhode Island Historical Society |

Painting was purchased by Dr. Perry for the Redwood Library. Formerly #6 (#78 on 1859 list). Reproduction of Feke's original of Callender in Rhode Island History April 1947 (6:2 44). Original at Rhode Island Historical Society (Goodyear 100:750). Henry Collins commissioned the original Feke as well as the Feke portrait of Reverend Hiscox (#141) next to which the Stuart copy hangs. |
