Description |
Joseph Hurlbut Patten (1801-1881), born in Newport, was the son of Reverend William Patten and Hannah Hurlbut. He graduated from Brown University in 1819, studied law with Samuel W. Bridgham, the mayor of Providence. After admission to the bar he practiced law in Newport (1821-28) and New York City. He was an inventor of some prominence and wrote scientific articles for Silliman's Journal in New Haven. Portrait. Adult male subject, waist-length view, facing forward, eyes slightly downcast. His right and left elbows rest on the arms of a chair; his left hand holds tan gloves. He has brown hair and eyes and wears a white shirt, red cape with fur [?] collar, tan vest and a black coat. The background is brown. |
