ULAN ID: 500006645 LCC ID: nr90012977 Jane Stuart (circa 1812-1888) or "Miss Jane", as she was fondly called by wealthy Newport, Rhode Island Society in her declining years, was the youngest daughter of Gilbert Stuart (who died penniless when Jane was 16 years old). She had trained herself in the art of painting and, although the youngest, set up a studio in Boston and became the sole support of her mother and three sisters for many years. Jane painted miniatures and portraits in oil and made endless copies of her father's famous painting of George Washington. After a studio fire in 1850 destroyed much of her work, she returned to Newport where she spent her last years. (Fielding 356; American Women Artists by Charlotte Rubinstein (43-45) |
