ULAN ID: 500031083 LCC ID: n85015083 Chester Harding (1792-1866), was born of indigent parents in a mountain village in Conway, Massachusetts . When he was fourteen the family moved to New York where he became an itinerant vender and agent..."and thus traversed the country in a wagon, enjoying new glimpses of life, until he fell in love with a rural beauty, turned chairmaker, and went to Pennsylvania..." where he worked as a sign painter for a year. Although entirely self taught, he became a fashionable portrait painter and lived at various times in St. Louis, Philadelphia, Boston, and London, where he painted several members of the Royal Family. He was taken ill on his annual sporting excursion to Cape Cod and died, at the age of seventy-three, in Boston in April of 1866.
