ULAN ID: 500010392 LCC ID: n50083265 Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) was born in Narragansett, Rhode Island, 3 December 1755. After moving to Newport, where he showed early promise in painting, he received instruction from Cosmo Alexander, a Scottish portrait painter whom he accompanied to Scotland in 1772. In 1775 he studied with Benjamin West in London, opened his own studio, and became one of the most sought-after portrait painters. He traveled to Ireland to paint many prominent people of the time, and eventually settled in Philadelphia in 1792, where he painted one hundred and twenty-four portraits of George Washington. He maintained a studio there until 1803 when he moved to Washington and finally to Boston where he lived the remainder of his life, dying 27 July 1828.
